Kenneth Richards entry into the soca arena has been the embodiment of learning, steady growth and a baptism of fire. Known popularly as K. Rich, the 22-year-old is the singer behind Nothing Less, one of the forerunners for Carnival 2012.
K. Rich is the son of Karen Lyons, a former concert promoter and the stepson of Soca legend Super Blue. He recalled the days of doing backing vocals for his stepfather from the age of eight and the late nights in the recording studio watching and learning. He has also contributed his vocal and song writing skills to his sister Faine Richards and stepsister Fay Ann Lyons-Alvarez. His musical journey, however, took him through the world of rock though he has always sought to translate his style to the Soca genre.
He performed in the rock and Caribbean Electronic Dance Music scene (CEDM) scene with 5 Miles to Midnight but departed to join Reelest8 formerly known as Surface under the tutelage of musical director Gordon Samuels. There he sang soca covers and learnt the art of singing and performing soca.
But after eight months of being with the band and trying to balance an academic schedule that was becoming hectic he had to bow out. He came to the conclusion that managing a solo career while getting through his tertiary education at the University of the Southern Caribbean would be easier to cope with. He has one more semester to go but has taken some time off to focus on his music.
K. Rich hunted for a producer that would be able to take his ideas and bring them to life. A friend of his eventually introduced him Kenwyn “GB” Holder and Jason “Nutron” Carter of GBM studio.
That introduction was all it took and they began working on what would be one of the hottest tracks on the airwaves at the moment. The process involved numerous overseas phone calls and emails with Holder and Carter until they were able to settle on the theme, tone and lyrics of the track.
“It was really important to me to be able to comfortable within the vibe of the track. It needed to represent my feeling and my style. It came together and I was very impressed with the guys at GBM because they were on point and professional, we always worked together and went back and forth till the idea came to life,” said K. Rich.
All that was left was for him to go to New York and lay the track down.
“I didn’t know what to expect at the studio so I booked a ten day stay in New York. To my surprise we were able to get through the track in a day. At the studio, GB and Nutron shaped, moulded and motivated me to execute what we rehearsed. I think I’m a better artiste because of the experience at their studio,” he said.
As the track was completed it was shared with DJs and promoters in the US, which pushed K. Rich into the limelight with a booking at the Miami Carnival.
“I was able to a four show booking but I had to release the song back home first of course. I performed at the Sun Live Stadium, which is the equivalent to Trini Carnival Monday and Tuesday. I was fortunate to be able to go on right after Benjai and even though my song was relatively unknown the crowd latched on to it. It was an amazing feeling,” he said.
He said that while recording the song he realised he had a good song on his hands but didn’t anticipate that it would spread at the rate it did.
“Man, wherever there are West Indians in the US the song just took off and at home I’m getting a lot of love. At the moment I’m treating every gig as a dress rehearsal for the big stage come Carnival Monday and Tuesday,” he said.

Together with fellow musician, Kerwin Du Bois, he has established a recording studio called High Performance Studios or HP Studios where it is expected, that many hits will be derived. Matthews has indicated both his and Du Bois’ desire to influence other young people to find solace and certainly success through music, via this endeavour – something he holds near to his heart. His first single created at the studio is called, ‘ Going With The Flow’- a track Matthews says represents much of what he enjoys in music. He says the song exemplifies music that relaxes the mind, soothes the soul and sets the tone for reflection.
